Two kinds of work,
held to the same standard.

Some of what we do is undertaken for clients. Some we develop ourselves. Keeping the distinction clear matters — it tells you where our incentives sit and what we are able to show you.

Client engagements

Work undertaken to help organizations develop and improve their own technology capabilities. The result belongs to them: the systems, the code, the documentation, and the understanding required to keep going without us.

Engagements vary in size from a focused piece of technical investigation to sustained development and implementation work. What does not vary is the sequence — understand the problem, agree the approach, build and test, then stay through implementation.

The shape this usually takes

Assess and plan: An organization has accumulated systems and needs an honest read on where it stands before committing budget. We assess, set out options with trade-offs, and recommend a sequence.
Build and integrate: A specific operational need has no adequate off-the-shelf answer, or existing systems hold parts of the same picture and cannot exchange it. We design, build and implement.
Investigate and prototype: A promising idea rests on an untested technical assumption. We scope the smallest piece of work that can confirm or rule it out, and report what we find either way.
Structure and teach: Specialized knowledge sits with a few people and needs to become a durable capability. We build the curriculum, reference material or platform that makes it transferable.

On case studies

We do not publish client names, logos, project details or outcome figures without written approval, and several of our engagements are covered by confidentiality. Rather than fill this page with unverifiable examples, we would rather describe how we work and discuss relevant experience with you directly. Named references and detailed case studies will appear here as they are approved for release.

Our own initiatives

Products, platforms, research and ventures developed through Sideband, where we hold the problem ourselves rather than being asked to solve someone else’s. These come out of the same places our client work does: a gap we kept encountering, or expertise that deserved to be more than a one-off.

Initiatives move at different speeds and not all of them will reach release. We describe them at the stage they are actually at, and we list them here only once there is something concrete to describe.

EchoTrace

In development

An initiative focused on specialized technical education and investigative technology. It joins two threads that run through much of our work: structured technical learning for practitioners, and tooling that supports careful, defensible interpretation of technical material.

EchoTrace is one initiative within a broader portfolio. It is in active development and is not generally available. Nothing here should be read as an announcement of a released product, and no capability, availability date or performance claim is implied.

Other initiatives are at earlier stages of research and development. We will add them here when they are far enough along to describe accurately.
