A Canadian applied technology company.
Beyond the
obvious.
We help organizations turn complex challenges into practical technology—combining strategy, software, data, and applied research to build systems that work in the real world.
What we do
01 / 05Technology applied to real problems.
Sideband exists for the problems that do not resolve neatly — where the requirements are unclear, the systems are already in place, and the constraints are not negotiable. That work needs more than engineering capacity. It needs someone who will understand the situation properly before committing to a direction, and who will still be there when the system meets its first real week of use.
Technical depth
Architecture, software, data and research handled by people who build as well as advise. The recommendation and the implementation come from the same understanding.
Practical execution
Work that ends in something running, documented and maintainable — not a report describing what somebody else should do next.
Operating context
Technology fails in the field for reasons that never appear in the specification: staffing, governance, existing systems, the habits of the people using it. We account for those first.
Capabilities
02 / 05Our capabilities.
Six areas of work. Most engagements draw on more than one, because useful answers rarely sit inside a single discipline.
- 01
Technology Strategy & Advisory
Assessments, architecture and modernization planning that turn uncertainty into a direction you can act on. - 02
Software & Digital Systems
Specialized applications, platforms, integrations and workflow tools designed around how the work actually happens. - 03
Data, AI & Automation
Data integration, analytics, decision support and automation — with AI treated as one option among several. - 04
Research & Applied Innovation
Technical investigation, feasibility work, experiments and prototypes that test an idea before it is committed to. - 05
Product & IP Development
Turning technical concepts and domain expertise into products and reusable technology. - 06
Technical Knowledge & Learning Systems
Specialized technical education, knowledge bases and learning platforms that make complex expertise usable.
Industries
03 / 05Where we work.
Our experience has concentrated in a few demanding sectors. The list is where we have worked, not the limit of where the approach applies.
- Healthcare
- Technology strategy, digital systems, integration and automation in environments where clinical work comes first.
- Public Safety & Investigations
- Technical education, digital evidence workflows, telecommunications knowledge and tools that support informed investigative work.
- Telecommunications
- Mobile and communications technologies, technical data interpretation, and specialized systems expertise.
- Defence & Security
- An emerging area of applied research and development involving sensing, software, technical learning and data interpretation.
- Other Complex Environments
- The approach travels. Where technology, domain knowledge and practical problem-solving have to come together, it applies.
Approach
04 / 05From understanding to implementation.
The same four movements, whatever the sector. What changes is how long each one takes.
- 01
Understand the problem
Before proposing anything, we establish what is actually happening: the constraints, the systems already in place, and who the work has to serve. Most failed technology projects were solving a slightly different problem.
- 02
Define the right approach
We set out the options with their trade-offs, then commit to one. That includes being clear about what we will not do, and where a simpler answer beats a more sophisticated one.
- 03
Build and test
We work in increments that can be reviewed while the direction is still easy to change, and we test against real conditions rather than ideal ones.
- 04
Implement and improve
Delivery is where technology usually struggles. We stay through implementation, hand over documentation and access, and adjust once the system meets actual use.
Our work
05 / 05Client work and our own initiatives.
Client engagements
Work undertaken to help organizations develop and improve their own technology capabilities — assessments, systems, data work, research and the implementation that follows. The organization keeps the result: the code, the documentation, and the understanding needed to carry it forward.
Our own initiatives
Products, platforms, research and ventures developed through Sideband, where we hold the problem ourselves. Some are in active development, others are at an earlier stage. We say which is which.
Next step
Have a complex challenge? Let’s work through it.
Tell us what you’re working on. If we are not the right people for it, we will say so — and point you toward who might be.
